Performances for the People was launched during the 2026 Soundcheck Art and Music Festival as an afternoon of artistic performances in Port Townsend’s historic City Council Chambers. The use of this civic space to celebrate and engage with art and music felt special, and the City, under its Creative District program, now plans to organize these events several times a year, in conjunction with First Saturday ArtWalk.

The first event included four performances and a house band:

  • Music by Tex Armstrong (pictured)
  • Improv with Port Townsend Youth Theater
  • Music by Leila Block
  • Poetry with Port Townsend Poet Laureate Rufina C. Garay and Shattering Glass poets
  • with the Boiler Room String Band as the house musicians

The program is open to all types of performing artists. It seeks a mix of performers to appeal to all ages through a special, high-quality creative experience that highlights the many incredible performers in our community. Musicians, actors, poets, writers, dancers, comedians, singers, magicians, and more, are encouraged to apply. Participation by youth artists is encouraged and will be given special priority.
